Description:
Before making the trip up Pikes peak, make sure you check the temperature and make sure you have appropriate clothing as the peak is 30-40 degrees cooler than at the base.
You should also check into the “crowds” and avoid peak times, like Labor day, July 4th etc. The fun of this ride is to not have to be bumper to bumper. At that point, it is not a desirable ride.
The road up to the top of Pikes Peak is a great road to ride. Starting in Manitou Springs, CO, head north on US 24W. This road does some nice winding itself for about 5 miles as it runs up along Fountain Creek. After around 5 miles, there are signs to Pikes Peak Hwy (and the “North Pole and Santa’s Workshop” which is on the same road) and the left turn is at a light. After turning left off US 24, follow the signs to Pikes Peak. It passes the North Pole/Santa’s Workshop amusement park, and you get to the Pikes Peak Hwy entrance. The cost is $15 but well worth the ride. There are generally no reservations needed but it is wise to check prior to heading out.
The road has lots of twists and turns along the 15 miles to the summit. There are many places to pull out for pictures. The elevation gain is 7,400 ft and it climbs quite rapidly at first. There is a plateau that occurs near the tree line. There are also several rest stops with food and drinks.
At the second visitor center, which is right above the tree line, there is a “traffic stop” to make sure the traffic is somewhat spread out and to check brake temperatures for those coming down. On the way up, there is no requirement to stop generally. As you go above the tree line, the road does a lot more switchbacks and the road is more challenging, but very enjoyable. It is advisable to pull off at times to see the scenery, as the scenery is spectacular.
At the top is a large parking lot and a visitor center to get food and drinks and souvenirs.
The ride back down is just as fun and challenging, especially above the tree line. At the visitor center right above the tree line, you might have to wait as cars get their brake temperatures read. Motorcycles are not stopped thanks to being able to use gearing and engine braking more and using the brakes less.
Road Conditions:
Pikes Peak Hwy is very well maintained. There are no issues on this road.
