- Brackettville to Rocksprings
- Rocksprings to Camp Wood
- 138 Miles – Approx 2:30 hrs
Description:
Starting in Camp Wood at the intersection of FM-337 and TX-55 head south on TX-55. This road has gentle curves and continues for 18 miles, after which you turn right onto FM-334. This also has gentle curves but has interesting scenery as it winds through the southern hill country. You ultimately pass a large solar farm as you come into Brackettville. As you come into Brackettville, you end up on 3rd Ave. At the intersection of FM-674 and FM-334, you can turn left and head into Brackettville itself, if you want to stop for gas, a snack, or a drink.
Leaving Brackettville, you head north on FM-674 for almost 60 miles. This is the most enjoyable part of the ride. Initially there are rolling hills and gentle curves, but then you gain a little elevation and encounter some S-curves. The scenery is very interesting as you do through small, populated areas. You also pass the Kickapoo Cavern State Park and the Stuart Bat Cave which are interesting places to visit. The S-curves become more frequent after you pass the State Park and continue almost until you come to the intersection with US-377, where you take a right toward Rocksprings. Once in Rocksprings, you turn right when you get to TX-55 and head back toward Barksdale and Camp Wood.
As you leave Rocksprings, TX-55 is a major road with 4 lanes at times, especially when you get into the S-Curves and tighter turns, which starts after about 5 miles and lasts for about 10 miles. There is generally minimal traffic on this road, allowing you to use both lanes frequently possible (however, there are 18-Wheelers that do use this road, so some caution is warranted).
After you pass through Barksdale, you travel 5 miles to the intersection of FM-337 and TX-55.
