Description:
Starting in Blanco, head south on US-281 for 11 miles and turn left onto FM-306 heading toward New Braunfels. FM-306 winds through the hill country and has some nice turns and views of Canyon Lake. After 21 miles, you turn left onto Purgatory road heading north. Purgatory road is a nice back road that rolls along the hill country with some gentle curves and goes for almost 7 miles where it ends at FM-32.
Turn left on FM-32 for 10 miles. Soon after you turn onto FM-32 you enter the “Devils’ Backbone”. This is a section that has several nice turns and rolls up and down. The Devils’ Backbone is only a stretch of 3 miles, but an enjoyable section. Heading east, before you get to the turns, you will see a popular motorcycle stop called Devil’s Backbone tavern.
After you pass through the Devils Backbone, the road continues along the hills until you turn right onto FM-484. FM-484 to the right is a very short loop off FM-32, so right after turning right, turn right again on Fisher Store road. Fisher Store road winds through the hills and crosses the Blanco river at the point where the flood of 2015 washed out much of the Blanco river valley in that area. The devastating impact to that area can still be seen. Fisher Store road ends up on FM-2325 where you turn right to head toward Wimberly. After only 1½ miles turn left on Jacob’s Well Rd which is a cutoff over to TFM-12 and passes the Jacob’s Well Nature Area which contains a 140 ft. deep artesian spring.
Turn left on FM-12 heading toward Dripping Springs and take this for 10 miles till it hits US-290 and turn left (West). Continue on US-290 7 miles and turn left onto FM-165. FM-165 has some nice scenery and gentle curves for 16 miles till it heads into Blanco where it dead-ends at TX-163 Loop. Turn right on the loop and it will take you back into Blanco.
